Say Hello To Thornhill News - Before It Changes

Thornhill News Digital Storytelling (TNDS)

Digital Storytelling As Documentary Process

Creating Programming For Digital Media

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thornhill News Digital Storytelling (TNDS), after two years of testing and trials, was launched.  Led with seminars and a weekly blog describing the options for many creative souls to use digital tools to tell their story, TNDS is in rapid acceleration.  The emphasis of the seminar is to advise documentary filmmakers on specific assets they can add to their proposals for funding.

If you want to stop by and say hello, we are presenting the next Thornhill News Digital Storytelling seminar on Sunday, November 6, 2011 in Culver City.  Here’s the link for registration:

Last week, a change was announced by The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) that could change the digital storytelling world forever.

Please start here, www.nab.org/documents/newsRoom/pressRelease.asp?id=2637, and then take a few minutes to read the recent background of Thornhill News.

Thornhill News Digital Storytelling is managed by The Thornhill Design Laboratory.  The lab, in turn, is offered by Thornhill News.

40 Years Of Communications, Innovation & Independence

2012 Is Your Year!

When the presentation ended, the room was very still.  No matter that there was the promise of “Happy Hour” at a very popular sports bar in the neighborhood.

After two days of discussion, we had come to the final items on the agenda.  The declaration that Thornhill News was on a sturdy path to develop a new communications network had been made, drawings on the white board had been shown and the easy and sometimes difficult questions has been answered.

One correction.  We were not really in a room.  We were on a soundstage at a public television station in Miami, Florida.  This was the 30th Annual Thornhill News January gathering.

It was an important date.  Certainly it was as important as the monster day in 1991 when a friend was kind enough to invite me to his studio in the San Fernando Valley to show me the basics of not only the Internet, but also e-mail.

There is still a question to be answered.  Was the meeting in Miami as important as the day I learned about the intentions of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to introduce the digital television platform?

In 1993 I moved to Seattle, Washington.  Within a year I had decided to spend all of my time learning more about digital media.

To be more effective in this process, I turned away from existing clients and determined there would be no further pursuit until I had designed a structure to take full advantage of my experience in communications, background in business and basic understanding of computer networks.

The next step was the 1997 formation of Internet Strategies.  And eventually, the addition in 2002 of The Digital Television Report.

From that time until now, my real work has been research, seminars, lectures and publishing – all leading to preliminary product development and eventually a presumed network.

The imagined keystone would be a radio show, geared to the affluent consumer and based on the efficiencies of digital distribution.

The true network would be built on the premise of that digital television platform.

At long last the opportunity for both has arrived.

The first Thornhill News Radio Show:

It is finally time to follow the marketplace.

The 2009 network planning will begin anew.  Check the chart at the end of this memo to see our structure.

For 2010, my dedication was to the examination of each element of my work to insure that my offers to the marketplace would be the highest quality.  I learned quickly that to make all components, ideas and upgrades flow with continuous improvements, there would have to be more collaboration.

Great timing.  2011 is my 40th year as an independent in the communications arena.  It is time for a few changes.

  • A weekly calendar was introduced.  This was the start of a new level of documentation.

  • For 2011, instead of an annual meeting, I initiated an annual publication, Portfolio.  The first package was presented at a meeting at the Algonquin Hotel in New York.  This is an inventory of all current Thornhill News properties and activities.

  • A return to Los Angeles is in the works.  A first address has been established.  You can mail to Thornhill News at Suite 11, NextSpace Los Angeles, 9415 Culver Boulevard, Culver City, California 90232.

The announcement from The National Association of broadcasters regarding digital channels is nothing less than a generation shift.

Legacy media can now expand beyond the low ceiling of single-channel programming.

New and social media will now have a broad shouldered, experienced partner in bringing tools, commerce, networking and expansion to the general public.

Entrepreneurs can pursue the dream of acquiring a broadcast digital channel, the gold standard in the digital realm.  Or begin to review the digital media device category for new designs, products or distribution channels.

The education community can lead with greater utilization of existing knowledge, teams and broadcast facilities.

Financial interests can chart and model an expanded global market as other nations follow the lead of the United States into a Digital Television future.

So now it is your turn.  How can you confirm that this is your year at Thornhill News?

  • With you, Thornhill News can expand the programs for training, research and business development.  All systems in our enterprise are being realigned to support new partners.

We expect that these partnerships and subsequent collaboration will serve our ongoing pace, and lead to joint discoveries to help all parties and audiences.

  • If your business, city, campus, organization or office has a need to collaborate with a leader – this is your wake-up call.

  • We’re taking steps to keep you aware of our progress in 2012.  It will be up to you to take the next step.  We do not have a sales department.

  • New positions will be created to support an on-line, public, weekly calendar.  Partner members of the crew will include producers, editors, visual communicators and programmers.

  • With partners, we will build a multipurpose production studio.  From inception to design to production, each of our media and cross-platform properties will come to life under our roof.

  • Starting January 1, 2012, clear documentation will be available at www.thornhillnewsarchives.com.  Administration will be charged with the responsibility to respond to each inquiry in a timely manner.

  • Save the date for the next Portfolio unveiling.  You can toast with us on January 14, 2012 in the city of Kihei, Maui, Hawaii.

Financial planning for the near term is very simple.  We are sincerely focused on revenue.  Our model for 2012 is to start with cash flow projections and to keep open books for our revenue sharing partners.

We expect to continue programming in at least three cities throughout 2012.  Location and space decisions for offices, events and storage could involve participating partners.

These are important matters.  Even before we start on 2012, Thornhill News has to build stronger pillars to found the new parent / partner relations.

To that end, the Thornhill News Radio Show is presented in beta mode through the end of 2011.  We can show both style and substance with our trial theme, on-air and archived programs. A significant amount of time has been allocated for the digital resources alone.

Establishing an address in the southern California market allows for master planning in many ways.  This is the new hub for the network, a space for meetings, attractive facilities for events and a testing model for our support technology.

The environment was selected to make plain our intentions to grow a studio.  We are blocks from Sony, MGM, Culver Studios and NPR West.  Our address is nestled in the creative communities of West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, housing some of the best known names in the entertainment universe.

With the latest announcements from the industry, our scheduling has been stepped up.  The 2012 calendar will be on the Web Site in January, yet we can give a mock schedule to confirmed partners at any time.

On Monday, November 7, 2011 at 10:00 AM Arts Culture Entertainment (ACE) will host an information session for potential partners in Los Angeles.  I will certainly attend.  Please let me know if this might be of interest to you or call ACE at (323) 257-2196.

On Wednesday, November 9, we will host an Editorial discussion that will create a bridge from our research for radio to expanded options in print, digital media, digital devices and digital television.  You can register for free at http://editorialdiscussion5.eventbrite.com.

Inquiries have been posted to secure an administration plan for the Thornhill News organization.  We will call on our existing trainers and educators within our Learning Opportunities circles to update their current materials when referring to our interest in Digital Television.

This is an opportunity to manage a strong suite of communications tools.  The arsenal has been assembled – waiting for the concept to take hold.

Our marketing planning has simple guidelines.

Conduct briefings on the new status of the digital media leaders and players

Update immediately the projects, programs and timelines for all elements of Thornhill News

            Review the national planning

Contact all partners and interested parties related to the international rollout of our efforts

Prepare preliminary descriptions for the next Portfolio

We will approach the upgrade of our 2012 roster with all due respect, yet there might be difficulties realigning in underperforming areas.

My research, work and review of all things related to digital media have covered more than 20 years.  There have been enough false starts, temporary holds and industry stalemates to believe that about 25% of that time was dedicated to rewrites and re-learning.

Now we start again. Now we grow.

Thanks for your attention and your continued support
