Digital Landscape – Windows 8 Integration

Thanks to great planning at Thornhill & Studio and tremendous support from the folks at Microsoft, we are ready for the big move.  Seattle, Washington will rock on Friday – October 26, 2012.

Following the Microsoft Windows 8 release on October 26, 2012, the reviews have been fantastic.  Now it is our turn.  12 of our crew, partners and a few friends will gather at the Seattle Microsoft Store on Saturday, November 3, 2012 for an exclusive meeting and tutorial on this monumental-game changing system.

We have an excellent opportunity to learn more about what will become a major part of the continuous improvement in infrastructure for all of Thornhill & Studio, our processes and products.

A light breakfast will be served, courtesy of Microsoft.  And our planning does not stop there.  Here are a few of the rollout dates for us.

November

3          Saturday          9:00 AM          Smart Coffee & Chat
                                                            Venue To Be Announced

3          Saturday          10:00 AM        T & S Digital Landscape – Program Integration
                                                            Windows 8

                                                            Elemental Wood Fired Pizza
                                                            www.elementalpizza.com

If you would like to join us at Microsoft, go to http://thornhill-digitallandscape-1.eventbrite.com for your free registration.  An official registration is mandatory for participation.  These few seats are at a premium; don’t hesitate to get your registration in as soon as possible.

If you are not in the Seattle area, or can’t fit these times into your schedule, check your local media and send a note to thornhillnews@hotmail.com  with your thoughts or to request further information.

Thornhill & Studio also has a number of requests to show an overview and inventory for the whole workplan and product.  Each quarter we respond with a meeting to help the planners, administrators, printers and administrators in the loop.  The Quarterly Design Review has been the answer this year, and will survive to help in 2013.

The dates are November 8 & 9.  The theme for the review is “Time” in all of its forms.  To be less esoteric, consider scheduling to be the take-away.

Bellevue is once again the beautiful environment for the two-day event.  A few details are at the end of this update.

Back To The Transition…

Space

Our office is very busy preparing for the full upgrade of the Thornhill Digital Storytelling (TDS) structure, schedule and partnerships.

Space is the number one quest to guarantee our growth.  TDS does well when it comes to identifying interesting venues for our events.  With proper matching of venue to agenda, meetings and seminars can be held anywhere.  We have succeeded in Los Angeles, Maui, Pittsburgh, Seattle and Bellevue.  Recent conversations with associates in Jersey City, New Jersey have included a quick look at dates to build meetings and/or a seminar for that market.

Our library is only accessed when preparing for an event.  Space for our books, magazines and reports could be the next move.

For the last three weeks I have had the luxury of a large, temporary space.  For the first time in years I have been able to sort files, review materials, rewrite structures and imagine intelligent staging for the next event without having to re-box everything after a few hours and vacate the building.

There are small spaces available in offices, stores and a warehouse.

Think Bigger!  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a dedicated space as the office for the management of TDS?  We could start with the addition of our archives and library.  The desks, lamps, file cabinets and file transfer boxes are ready to go.

Then, of course, our production and learning studio...  I am still making inquiries, touring buildings and imagining the future in three possible cities.  Well, let’s make that four.  In addition to Maui, Miami and Los Angeles; let’s now consider Jersey City.

The Digital Landscape

Almost every company, organization, school, artist and entrepreneur will think this year about their basic technology and equipment for access.  In a nutshell, this is our, and your, Digital Landscape.

With many changes afoot, think about “Program Integration” for existing and new devices. Have you started planning for any of the upcoming changes?

For the update and partial revision of our technology support, we have announced an intention to adopt the new Microsoft Windows 8 as our platform of record.

I have learned that there will be special cases, but the first review revealed these necessary parts: email (Hotmail), blog (Blogger), Web site (Network Solutions), social media (Facebook and LinkedIn) and event registration (Eventbrite.)

The full Platform Integration will start after the release of Windows 8 on October 26, 2012.  We are planning a joint tutorial and planning meeting with Microsoft for November 3, 2012.  If you would like to attend, please let me know.

Timeline

After the upgrade meeting on Saturday, November 3rd, we will be fast and furious in preparing for a heavy TDS schedule for 2013.

There will be a well-connected schedule of monthly events.  Both the seminars (TDS Digital Storytelling Documentary Proposal Seminars) and the publications will be well-promoted.

Additions

New searches are under way to learn more about possibilities of TDS seminars at film festivals and museums.  In pour first requests for information, we have been given warm responses from each of these cultural leaders.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

TDS NEWS

For now, TDS NEWS serves as our newsletter, printed event program and project update resource.  This started as a tool to describe the “50 Steps For Documentary Success” with a brief introduction.  When first passed out, it was only 2 pages.

Now the information covers 36 pages and is ready for the next plateau.

We need researchers, administrators, writers, designers and possibly distributors.  The next upgrade will put researchers to work contacting documentary suppliers and following up leads for documentary money.

TDS NEWS Digital is the clear title for a path to the future.  Currently this is only the blog at http://digitalstorytellingseminar.blogspot.com.

By the end of the 2012 the title will cover the Web site, apps, links, interactive tools, digital design and digital distribution.

We plan to distribute via digital media devices, starting with tablets and smartphones.  We expect the Microsoft Surface will be first and the iPad second.

Of course with both print and digital distribution, we are open to subscribers and subscription management can’t be far behind.

When presenting the TDS Documentary Proposal Seminar, an important part of the presentation is still the discussion of the “50 Steps To Documentary Success.”  In this section of the conversation I identify many responsibilities, processes, products and categories one must pay attention to - to build a successful funding proposal.  This information is also in our printed program TDS NEWS and carried in all parts of TDS NEWS Digital, including our blog.

Also in the publication are sections for examples of digital storytelling and listings of media outlets you might want to keep in touch with to promote your concept, your documentary or your studio.

In these jammed pages I refer you to specific downloads for product examples and specific links for the related media Web sites.

With additional research support, there will be expansion.  Where possible, I will list specific providers, suppliers, companies or organizations for those producers prepared to contract for help on their digital storytelling project.

For instance, instead of simply indicating that audio, video or digital photography are component parts of production and distribution, I will give the headline and leave space for specific names or companies and contact information.  Space in the publication is limited, but I am anxious to help.

Of course, I can only list the information that I have on hand.  On the next pages, I have listed the titles that would gain from this up-to-the-minute detail.  You can provide the contact data for yourself, your service or your company.  If you have associates who might benefit from this open referral, please let them know.  In fact, feel free to distribute this information far and wide.

The TDS Documentary Proposal Seminars have been presented in Bellevue, Maui, Oakland, Pittsburgh and Seattle.  The next new locations are Miami and Washington, D.C.

If you are listed, you might be contacted by producers or directors from across the country!

Radio Is Golden – And Still Powerful

I am looking for writers and/or producers who have turned their news or non-fiction broadcast radio script, report or show into a film or television documentary.

You could be one of three featured as a positive example at the next Thornhill Digital Storytelling Documentary Proposal seminar.  A description of your work under “Radio As Anchor For Digital Storytelling” would also be carried in TDS NEWS and on the TDS NEWS blog (http://digitalstorytellingseminar.blogspot.com/).

TDS will only carry the description of your effort.  We will not attempt to air, nor distribute anything beyond our own seminar, printed program and online blog.

Please submit a written description only – not the project.  There is no charge for submission.  Entries can come from individuals, groups, schools, businesses or stations.

This is not to be construed as a business offer, nor will there be any financial compensation for participation.  We will not pursue any form of ownership through this opportunity.  Thornhill Digital Storytelling (TDS) only intends to recognize and celebrate your hard work.

There is more.  Could you be our on-air personality, engineer, salesperson or producer for a radio show about design.  The world of audio is ripe for our information, contacts and referrals.

Radio still works for music – why not for our interviews?

Friends' tips, radio still drive musical choices –
The digital revolution may not be as revolutionary as believed, according to a music survey that found listeners more in tune with friends' tips and radio than blogs and social networking.

Our marketplace concept brings together all parts needed to build a film, or a production studio or a collaborative cluster of film-related businesses to grow the region.

We start with a seminar series, printed programs and access to information supporting the global transition from analog to digital product distribution.  From Internet applications to digital television to digital channels, your career in the industry will be given a major boost by participating in the Thornhill Digital Storytelling seminar.

The Maui Video Marketplace will grow from an idea to a location for training, serving clients and developing proprietary and contract media products.  The choices will include live events, classes, print media, audio and radio, video and television, digital and Internet, plus film industry connections.

Are You A Writer?

Hollywood Wants Stories With Digital Assets & Features
Will A Studio Invest In You?

I started this streak of good fortune with a concept for a documentary television special.  With 25 locations and almost 30 individuals included, I felt that a timeline and a workplan would be the first steps.  From that a structure was born, business development considerations added and detailed research mapped out and I was on my way.  The working title has been altered a few times.  Currently it is The DTR National Tour: Food & Beverage Stories – 2002 To 2012.

The film community has convinced me that documentary proposals for filmmakers are completely different.  There is still a lot to learn.

I do feel we are on the right track.  Look at the serious weight in this press release from CNN.

First CNN Film, Richard E. Robbins’s “Girl Rising,” to air Spring 2013 on CNN, CNN International alongside Theatrical Release

Projects from Acclaimed Filmmakers Alex Gibney and Andrew Rossi

CNN, the worldwide leader in news, today announced the creation of CNN Films to secure feature-length documentaries for air on CNN and CNN International, alongside theatrical distribution. The move is part of a wider strategy to acquire original non-fiction content to complement CNN’s award-winning news programs; it was announced by CNN Worldwide Managing Editor Mark Whitaker.
“Girl Rising,” the first documentary acquired by CNN Films, will air in spring 2013.

The film, which inspired a global action campaign to promote girls’ education called 10×10, tells the extraordinary stories of several girls from around the globe, fighting to overcome impossible odds to realize their dreams.

The film includes voice performances by Academy Award Winner Meryl Streep, Academy Award Nominee Anne Hathaway, Kerry Washington, and Selena Gomez.
“Girl Rising” is directed by Academy Award Nominee Richard E. Robbins (“Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience”) and executive produced by Tom Yellin and Holly Gordon of the Documentary Group and Paul G. Allen of Vulcan Productions.

CNN Films has also signed development deals with Academy Award Winning Director and Producer Alex Gibney (“Taxi to the Dark Side,” “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” and “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer”) and Director Andrew Rossi (“Page One: Inside the New York Times”). Both will develop original documentaries to air on CNN.

“CNN Films will bring distinguished, thought-provoking documentary programming to our global audiences on all our television, online and mobile platforms,” said Whitaker. “We want these documentaries to tell compelling stories and stimulate important discussions across CNN’s other programs and websites.”

The original feature-length documentaries will examine an array of political, social, and economic subject matters. The films will premiere in primetime and will re-air in order to increase exposure. Surrounding the premiere of each documentary, acclaimed CNN programs will run dedicated programming that sheds light on the topics and issues discussed in each film. In-depth interviews, expert commentary, roundtable discussions, debates, and behind-the-scenes footage will be featured across all of CNN’s broadcast and online platforms.

Amy Entelis, senior vice president of talent and content development for CNN Worldwide, and Vinnie Malhotra, senior vice president of development and acquisitions for CNN Worldwide, will oversee the acquisition strategy of documentaries under the CNN Films banner. Malhotra will manage the day-to-day operation of CNN Films, and work directly with filmmakers to develop original projects.

CNN Films also plans to bring the documentaries beyond the small screen by developing strategic partnerships to leverage distribution opportunities at film festivals and in theaters.

To learn more about “Girl Rising” and to view the trailer, please visit: http://10x10act.org/presenting-girl-rising.

The CNN announcement is a good example.  However, we have not been shy.  There have been, and there will be more, exploratory meetings with CBS in New York and Los Angeles, seminars at KCET Television in Hollywood, The Northwest Film forum in Seattle and the Maui Research & Technology Center in Kihei.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seminar Audiences

You might have noticed that in our announcement for the Thornhill Digital Storytelling Documentary Proposal seminar we suggest that the event is for “Individuals, Businesses & Arts Organizations - For Film, Television, Radio & Branded Content Producers.”

At the start of each event, there is a time for self-introductions.  Along with the writers, planners and filmmakers that are always present, we have recently attracted music professionals, dance administrators, visual artists and designers.  Adding the input of these creatives makes for a richer and more beneficial experience for all involved.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Industry Growth

We started as a projected service for writers in the television industry.  The interests of documentary filmmakers came next.  Now, we seemed to be swamped with news and announcements about “Branded Content.”  With bigger dollars made available for the production of short films from corporate and advertising agency clients, the borders are being erased in the more sophisticated camps.

Is it difficult to imagine a building having a birthday, a personality or a deeply involved history?  These questions and more will be answered for two test clients as we delve into the background of two “Historic Buildings” we have selected.  From a basic timeline to a detailed biography, these trials will be very exciting.  Are you interested?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crew

We have openings for crew members.  The most obvious gap is in the wide chasm of administration.  There is still hope for a partner company, yet we have met with qualified individuals who could be of great assistance on a traditional contract basis.

The research needs are growing.  Here’s a challenge – can we find 3 companies for each of the elements in the 50 Steps To Documentary Success profile?  For instance, when we suggest regular meetings as one of the 50 steps, is it ok to list one or more meeting planners – or even venues?

Here’s another.  What basic books can we recommend for the 50 elements, the genre or even for the documentary film industry?

We have always needed, and will possibly always need, production support.  If this is your turf, ask for the list of work assignments that we have reserved for production partners.

It is apparent that a monthly planning session would be helpful.  This is also a great way to introduce new partners and associates to the intricacies of our work, our very cool partners and the vast potential in this category. The next date for a planning meeting has yet to be set.  If you are hankering to participate, get on the mailing list by sending a note to thornhilldesignlab@hotmail.com.

A Partners Update

A few capable companies have responded to our call for partners.  Their feedback: The structure of the TDS initiative is solid.  The continued research – guaranteeing an always-great seminar is stellar.  If we continue this way, there could now be partners for administration, TDS NEWS and TDS NEWS Digital.

Here again, should we have weekly or monthly planning sessions?  Let’s pull out the calendar, talk to our current partners and start building a bigger, grander structure and project.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brand New!

A new service will be available by January 2013.  We’re in test now, so I won’t try to explain the entire product, but it will be based on helping others develop their biography.  These could be personal, corporate, buildings or even cities!

This is a direct result of our asking “What’s Your Story?” in each of our Documentary Funding Proposals events.  Here’s a quote from the event program: “      The focus of this leading-edge workshop is showing how to link the many necessary parts – from inception, through creative, technology and production, to traditional or digital distribution and real world business development.  These are the elements that will make your funding proposal rise above all the rest.

The agenda for this brand of storytelling covers more than 50 items.  Each is offered in a way that shows how to be a winner in the specific category, yet still blend them all into a meld that guarantees continuity and continuous improvement.”

And here is my take on the new effort:

A Biography

This is wonderful!  I am witnessing the evolution of storytelling.  I am part of a mass revelation that telling your own story is possible, enlightening and beneficial.  As a civilization we have options, we have understanding and we have self-awareness.  We have the tools, we have the images and we have the music!

We share our ideas through conversations, telephone calls, letters, emails and social media.  Sometimes we relate these concepts as a story.  And most of the time it is a true story.

Does our non-fiction story have value beyond our initial telling?  Would others, beyond our circle of friends want to hear our story – and perhaps pass it along to their circle of friends?  How do we start?

To make it easy, let’s assume that the form we want is a biography.  Our remembering, telling and passing along could be as simple as being excited to tell the latest while visiting with a friend over coffee – or as elaborate as a combination of story, book, film and television series.

What if you turned your story into a biography?  You could tell a compelling story about a person, family, organization, project, business, building, street, neighborhood, city or state.

For me, a true story is a resource.  For you it can be many things.

Our objective is to provide you with the awareness, the connections and the business rationale to support you, the storyteller and your story.  We do not review, evaluate nor critique.

Could you help write company or organization biographies?

Heritage Buildings Presentations

Our new excitement is called “Heritage Buildings” with all the trimmings of birth, timeline, research and continued growth of the production and distribution opportunities.

So now we begin…

The Thornhill Design Laboratory
Business, Communications Design

Monday, October 15, 2012 - Week 43

Our general plan

According to an important friends and possible partner, our Thornhill Design Laboratory has not been able to effectively communicate our mission, our passion nor our successes without a Web site.

Of course we know that a corporate communications campaign would be helpful.  However, the message is that because of the depth of our research, the complexity of our structure and the far-reaching opportunities in the transmedia future, better presentations are required.

Well, so be it.  We will get busy.  My promise to my friends, our supporters and future sponsors is that we will have a Web site by the end of January 2013.

Of course, this opens a wide swath of opportunities for designers, writers, programmers, architects, planners and editors.

Recently, we introduced the thought of separating the Thornhill Design Laboratory weekly news from the Thornhill Digital Storytelling blog

The raw materials will follow this introduction – with a few updates.  This is great work.  Please let me know what other information you are hoping to see in our next generation of products.

Some of this weekly reportage has been taken on by our low-key Salon.  Each Wednesday we start at 10:00 AM and power through until 11:00 AM or Noon.

We started on a Thornhill Design Lab inventory.  With the finished list, production scheduling would be a lot easier.

Planning, process management, crew-building and experience are all attributes need for the “coach” of this endeavor.  I learned a lot from just the first meeting and there will be more during the week.  Are you interested in joining the fun?

The TDS Digital Landscape

Thornhill Digital Storytelling will soon announce plans to be part of a 30-company campaign to learn more about Windows 8 and the necessary drama to make enterprise-wide integration work.

The recent flurry of activity in the smartphone and tablet (mobile) space makes our decision to adopt the Windows 8 platform a lot more interesting.  This means there will be a transition to a common platform for most of what we do.  Our integration of every aspect of our technology universe into one productive framework could be a dream come true.

An internal survey is being conducted.  We’re looking to identify any and all software from Microsoft.  As the company rumbles on towards the public launch of Windows 8 on October 6 and our workshop on November 3, 2012, we want to tag along.  To start, having a tidy file of all things Microsoft will help move us to the next step.

We plan to hit the ground running to create continuity from this start position, through Windows, Surface, telephones, communications and our now ever-important Internet presence.

This is all part of The Thornhill & Studio - Digital Landscape – Platform Integration campaign.

Scheduling

The timeline is the first step in building our 2013 workplan.  Whether we call it a calendar, production schedule or traffic, this will be the backbone of what will be our most productive year.  On the calendar will be annual events, the weekly meetings and presentations, monthly reports, seminars, publications and financial reports.  For quarterly reviews, travel – and again – financial statements every three months will be quite busy.

Inventory

The next step is to conclude (as best we can) a detailed inventory of our activities.

(1) The Thornhill Design Lab Salon

A weekly synopsis of everything connected to the Thornhill Design Laboratory.  Ongoing development includes Administration, adjusting the calendar, The Digital Landscape, Database Management, Financial Planning, combined editorial, Design Continuity, Integrated Marketing Planning; with Partner and Sponsor Presentations.

We compare our status to the previous months, set direction for the near-term and work a bit on our new package.

Each week we also feature a book that is related to our continuing work, growth and the market.  If you have suggestions – let us know.

The Thornhill Design Laboratory Salon is presented in Fremont, an iconic neighborhood in Seattle, Washington – known as “The Center Of The Universe” by residents and neighbors.

The purpose of the weekly event is to give and get details about The Thornhill Design Laboratory, our continuous improvement and specific projects.  Join me each Wednesday morning (we start at 10:00 AM) in the Fireside Room at the Fremont Abbey Arts Center, 4272 Fremont Avenue in Seattle, Washington 98103.  Check: http://fremontabbey.org.  The salon will always be a source for everything at the Lab and up-to-the-minute news in the project design world.

There is no mandatory fee to attend, but donations will be accepted when you register.  Pay what you choose.  Advance registration is requested.  Send a note to thornhilldesignlab@hotmail.com.  Caution: The group is limited to twelve, so that each person can fully participate in the discussion.

Hospitality is part of the package.  You are welcome to bring pastries or treats for the group to enjoy.

Why a Salon?

The Thornhill Design Laboratory has many options to examine storytelling.  We’re information and research driven.  Our objective is to provide our participants with the awareness, the connections and the business rationale to support the storyteller and their story.  We do not review, evaluate nor critique.

To stimulate meaningful conversation, I have compiled a list of associates and friends I would like to invite as a special guest for a Wednesday of their choosing.

Would you be willing to spend an hour or two with us?  If so, please check your calendar and let me know what date between now and the end of September would be best.  Our standard schedule is Wednesday morning from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM.  For special days, we continue until Noon.  And if the fun just won’t stop, we can wander to a nearby cafĂ© for lunch.

The Salon is getting great attention.  The way to make it better is to introduce you and your list to the event.  We would certainly like to get your opinions.  Join us.

(3) The Fashion Media Project

What Will Make The Fashion Media Project Important?

Will it be the research, or the events?  Perhaps our media production in radio, television the Internet and for tablets will be the ticket.  Or the lessons we can teach about building a transmedia project or creating community with our Fashion Bloggers Connection.

To combine the elements, there will be a second demo of a Fashion Media Project radio show.  Arrangements are now being made to get this year’s research started of another “What Are You Wearing New Year’s Eve” program.  We will have one guest in the studio, plus 2 or 3 guests in other studios around the country.  This interview-heavy capture will be followed by post-production at another site and made available to stations through syndication.

After the recording session, we hope to have a reception, with lots of introductions and questions.  The production will probably happen in November.  The base station and/or city will be decided upon soon.

The smart money is on Los Angeles!

(4) Thornhill Design Lab Workshop

Design Review / Kai Zen
What is design?  Aesthetics for inspiration, product development, financial planning and real-world
case studies are included - create using function and form.  Design efficient operations structures,
work processes, digital networks, multi-platform media programming and manufacturing to proceed aggressively in the digital-led economy.  You will better understand and appreciate the talents of designers, storytellers, planners and artists.

(5) Production & Learning Studio

For proprietary projects the weekly schedule, ongoing research and clever documentation are needed.  As promised, the new Internet presence, plus custom for the best-selling Digital Media Devices will also take a lot of time and resources.

We have so much more to do.  Will we ever the have the proper facilities, in a quality environment, braced by our library and archives?

If so, we will then be ready for Client Services.  Ready for case studies, strategy planning, product development for extensions and co-productions.

To help in our search for the very best space, we have been getting advice from Starchild Investments, LLC.  The holding company has a lot of experience in research, acquisitions and management of their own portfolio of real properties.

The digital revolution may not be as revolutionary as believed, according to a music survey that found

Foundation Dollars & The benefit of a robust inventory…

Last month a national foundation announced a new initiative to support entrepreneurs in and around Miami, Florida.  we contacted them immediately.

To follow up on the pleasant exchange and an invitation to submit a proposal, our offices have been in touch with friends in Florida, and indeed, associates in Miami.

Based on response from these contacts, a draft is now being prepared for a submission to offer a Miami-specific presentation of the Thornhill Design Laboratory.  We can start with a seminar series for film and video entrepreneurs and support special editions of TDS NEWS, listing local companies able to produce, or support producers, in the multi-platform or transmedia world.  Our full inventory would be welcome in Miami.  Care to join us?

With the success of company biographies, branded content, webisodes and digital documentaries, we see a great future for both studio and independent risk-takers in the film community.

For companies interested in seeing the full scope of this opportunity, send a note to thornhilldesignlab@hotmail.com.

If your interest is even broader, you might consider attending the “free to everyone” Thornhill & Studio Quarterly Design Review – Q4, to be held November 8 & 9, 2012 at DeVry University in Bellevue, Washington.  The details will be announced soon.

If your company has bigger concepts for partnering with the Lab – let me know!
