-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Digital Storytelling As Documentary Process
Creating Programming For Digital Media
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Labor Day Is Special
This is such a quiet holiday. There no gifts, few parades, no fireworks and
most of my family members stay at or near home.
This year seemed to be even quieter than others. Other than the bookends of the hyper-active
political party conventions, I have had a nice time chatting, planning, reading
and writing. This has been a holiday of
nice telephone conversations rather than puffy emails, presentations or
announcements.
And instead of a massive shift, or an avalanche of report
and booklets to indicate an upgrade, it seems to be fitting to just let it
happen.
However, there is an upgrade going on. The pace quickens; there are more smiles and
fewer arguments. The outline of the
finished puzzle is visible and there are fewer pieces to sift through to make
the next move or placement. I like it!
The finished puzzle will be revealed in November. I expect there will be completion before the next
Thornhill & Studio Design Review Quarterly.
Those specific dates are November 8 & 9, 2012. We will once again welcome you at the DeVry
University Bellevue Center in downtown Bellevue, Washington.
This year consider time as context for our theme or
storyline. Time as in “does anyone
really know what time it is?” Time as in
“Scheduling.” And certainly Time as in
our busy calendar. Do you make time for
yourself?
Other highlights in the two days are: “Contacts In Milan,
Italy”, “The DTR Resource Center” and fascinating new possibilities for “A
Research Office.”
Much of what
we can brag about in this current upgrade is related to product development.
The Documentary Funding Proposal seminars are the core of
this evolution. Publishing is showing
and growing at a calm, regulated pace. TDS
NEWS, our detailed newsletter and event program, is complimentary at the
seminar and includes:
The Thornhill Digital Storytelling “50 Steps To
Documentary Success” checklist and up-to-date industry examples and news links.
The publication lists “Everyday Resources” a slate of
industry stalwarts providing no-cost, emailed, daily information reports on
individuals, companies and trends in digital media.
And new to us all will be the TDS News Listings. There are details later in this message.
A crossroads this month is to decide on the publication
schedule. Should the printed TDS NEWS
continue on a per event basis or move up the slippery slope of monthly or
quarterly issues?
TDS NEWS Digital is still our best contact with the world
through our every-Monday issues. We will
soon expand to a nulti-platform structure, including integration into our new “Digital
Landscape.” This is the hottest request from
the film industry!
We are becoming little bit better at collaborations and we
are also adding to the market expansion for storytelling. We all learn more about the industry as we
research and produce events. To support
our next thoughts for growth, I am on the road for meetings in the New York/New
Jersey area in September.
Quietly, of course.

Are
You A Writer?
Hollywood Wants
Stories With Digital Assets & Features
Will A Studio
Invest In You?
I started this streak of good fortune with a concept for a
documentary television special. With 25
locations and almost 30 individuals included, I felt that a timeline and a
workplan would be the first steps. From
that a structure was born, business development considerations added and detailed
research mapped out and I was on my way.
The work title has been altered a few times. Currently it is The DTR National Tour: Food
& Beverage Stories – 2002 To 2012.
Time?
The film community convinced me that documentary proposals
for filmmakers are completely different.
There is still a lot to learn.
An example:
The
Grolsch Film Works Fund is a source of funding for film makers to apply for in
specific countries worldwide.
Since 1615, The Dutch beer brand Grolsch has
been driven by creativity, innovation and great ideas. This resulted in a bold
and hoppy tasting premium lager that is enjoyed all over the world in the
iconic Swingtop bottle.
It is these same qualities, fundamental to
independent film, that have inspired Grolsch Film Works. Grolsch Film Works is
a global initiative with the purpose of representing the true spirit,
inspiration and talent behind the emergent independent film industry.
Its goal is to promote and cultivate
up-and-coming filmmakers, actors, directors and the genius that goes into
making inspiring indie movies through funding projects and showcasing their
work worldwide. http://grolschfilmworks.com
There have been meetings with CBS in New York and Los
Angeles, seminars at KCET Television in Hollywood, The Northwest Film forum in
Seattle and the Maui Research & Technology Center in Kihei. Next will be Miami.

Documentary
Funding Proposals - What’s Your
Story?
The focus of this leading-edge workshop is showing how to
link the many necessary parts –
from inception, through creative, technology and
production, to traditional or digital
distribution and real world business development. These are the elements that
will make your funding proposal rise above all the rest.
The agenda for this brand of
storytelling covers more than 50 items.
Each is offered in a way
that shows how to be a winner in
the specific category, yet still blend them all into
a meld that guarantees continuity
and continuous improvement.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A Biography
This is wonderful! I
am witnessing the evolution of storytelling.
I am part of a mass revelation that telling your own story is possible,
enlightening and beneficial. As a
civilization we have options, we have understanding and we have
self-awareness. We have the tools, we
have the images and we have the music!
We share our ideas through conversations, telephone calls,
letters, emails and social media.
Sometimes we relate these concepts as a story. And most of the time it is a true story.
Does our non-fiction story have value beyond our initial
telling? Would others, beyond our circle
of friends want to hear our story – and perhaps pass it along to their circle
of friends? How do we start?
To make it easy, let’s assume that the form we want is a
biography. Our remembering, telling and
passing along could be as simple as being excited to tell the latest while
visiting with a friend over coffee – or as elaborate as a combination of story,
book, film and television series.
What if you turned your story into a biography? You could tell a compelling story about a
person, family, organization, project, business, building, street,
neighborhood, city or state.
For me, a true story is a resource. For you it can be many things.
Our objective is to provide you with the awareness, the
connections and the business rationale to support you, the storyteller and your
story. We do not review, evaluate nor
critique.
Could you help write company or organization biographies?
Our new excitement is called “Heritage Buildings” with all
the trimmings of birth, timeline, research and continued growth of the
production and distribution opportunities.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Travel
This month I will
travel to Pennsylvania. I have an appointment
to speak to undergrad and graduate students at Shippensburg University. Our first conversations will probably stay
within the boundaries of digital media and the emerging business models for
Digital Television. Right Joe?
Our second
conversations will be all about the stories we can carry through these
enlightened media opportunities. This
will probably sound a lot like digital storytelling – or even transmedia.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
TDS NEWS Listings
Our office is very busy preparing for the full upgrade of
the Thornhill Digital Storytelling (TDS) structure, schedule and
partnerships. The re-launch dates are November
8 & 9, to be compatible with the next Thornhill & Studio Quarterly
Design Review.
When presenting the TDS Documentary Proposal Seminar, an
important part of the presentation is discussion of the “50 Steps To
Documentary Success.” In this section of
the conversation I identify many responsibilities, processes, products and
categories one must pay attention to - to build a successful funding
proposal. This information is also in
our printed program TDS NEWS and carried in all parts of TDS NEWS Digital,
including our blog at: http://digitalstorytellingseminar.blogspot.com/
Also in the publication are sections for examples of digital
storytelling and listings of media outlets you might want to keep in touch with
to promote your concept, your documentary or your studio.
In these jammed pages I refer you to specific downloads for
product examples and specific links for the media Web sites.
This note is to alert you to a new effort. Where possible, I will list specific
providers, suppliers, companies or organizations for those producers prepared
to contract for help on their digital storytelling project.
For instance, instead of simply indicating that audio, video
or digital photography are component parts of production and distribution, I
will give the headline and leave space for specific names or companies and
contact information. Space in the
publication is limited, but I am anxious to help.
Of course, I can only list the information that I have on
hand.
I will list the titles that would gain from this up-to-date
detail. On the next pages of this notice,
I have listed these titles and you can provide the contact data for yourself,
your service or your company. If you
have associates who might benefit from this open referral, please let them know. Feel free to distribute this information far
and wide.
The TDS Documentary Proposal Seminars have been presented in
Bellevue, Maui, Oakland, Pittsburgh and Seattle. The next new locations are Miami and
Washington, D.C.
If you are listed, you might be contacted by producers or
directors from across the country!

have a lot to check into and talk about at the Salon. Check: www.theseptemberissue.com.
From Wikipedia,
“The September Issue is a 2009 American documentary film about the

during the production of the September 2007 issue of American Vogue magazine.”

story. We do not review, evaluate nor

To stimulate meaningful conversation, I have compiled a list
of associates and friends I would like to invite as a special guest for a

Would you be willing to spend an hour or two with us? If so, please check your calendar and let me
know what date between now and the end of September would be best. Our standard schedule is Wednesday morning
from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. For special
days, we continue until Noon. And if the
fun just won’t stop, we can wander to a nearby café for lunch.
The Salon is getting great attention. The way to make it better is to introduce you
and your list to the event.

Foundation Dollars - The benefit
of a robust inventory…
Last month a national foundation
announced a new initiative to support entrepreneurs in and around Miami,
Florida.
In appreciation, Thornhill &
Studio contacted foundation project management to present the case for The
Digital Television Report (DTR) - with equal consideration for the 20 years of
collaborative work to support communications entrepreneurs and the fact that
DTR is, in itself, an entrepreneurial and partner-supported marvel.
In addition, past outlines, press
releases and other materials related to the active participation by DTR in
Miami were forwarded to the project director.
After a positive response from the
foundation office, including a gracious invitation to continue our
communication by telephone, it was apparent that national and global
aspirations of The Digital Television Report were not a good match for the
dedication by this funder to local Miami businesses.
To follow up on the pleasant
exchange and an invitation to submit a proposal for other options, our offices
have been in touch with friends in Florida, and indeed, associates in Miami.
Based on response from these
contacts, a draft is now being prepared for a submission to offer a
Miami-specific presentation of Thornhill Digital Storytelling, through a
seminar series for film and video entrepreneurs and support special editions of
TDS NEWS, listing local companies able to produce, or support producers, in the
multi-platform or transmedia world. Care
to join us?
With the success of company biographies,
branded content, webisodes and digital documentaries, we see a great future for
both studio and independent risk-takers in the film community.
Our Robust Inventory
The
Digital Television Report & DTR Support is well represented in these
categories by DTR Media (www.linkedin.com/in/dtrmedia).
However, as indicated, the
Thornhill Digital Storytelling combination can be of tremendous benefit to
targeted environments, even Miami. Or
our next event in Maui County, Hawaii could be helpful.
For
companies interested in seeing the full scope of this opportunity, send a note
to DTR at digitaltvreport@hotmail.com or to thornhilldesignlab@hotmail.com for
Thornhill Digital Storytelling.
If your
interest is even broader, you might consider attending the “free to everyone”
Thornhill & Studio Quarterly Design Review – Q4, to be held November 8
& 9, 2012 at DeVry University in Bellevue, Washington. The details will be announced soon.

Radio Is
Golden
I am looking for writers and/or producers who have turned
their news or non-fiction broadcast radio script, report or show into a film or
television documentary.
You could be one of three featured as a positive example at
the next Thornhill Digital Storytelling Documentary Proposal seminar.
A description of
your work under “Radio As Anchor For Digital Storytelling” would also be
carried in TDS NEWS and on the TDS NEWS blog (http://digitalstorytellingseminar.blogspot.com/).
TDS will only carry the description of your effort. We will not attempt to air, nor distribute
anything beyond our own seminar, printed program and online blog.
Please submit a written description only – not the
project. There is no charge for
submission. Entries can come from individuals,
groups, schools, businesses or stations.
The deadline for this round is midnight, PDT, Wednesday, October 10,
2012.
This is not to be construed as a business offer, nor will
there be any financial compensation for participation. We will not pursue any form of ownership
through this opportunity. Thornhill
Digital Storytelling (TDS) only intends to recognize and celebrate your hard
work.
Audiences
You might have noticed that in our announcement for the Thornhill
Digital Storytelling Documentary Proposal seminar we suggest that the event is
for “Individuals, Businesses & Arts
Organizations - For Film, Television, Radio & Branded Content Producers.”
At the start of each event, there is a time for
self-introductions. Along with the
writers, planners and filmmakers that are always present, we have recently
attracted music professionals, dance administrators, visual artists and
designers. Adding the input of these
creatives makes for a richer and more beneficial experience for all involved.
Radio Is Golden – And Still Powerful
Friends'
tips, radio still drive musical choices - The digital
revolution may not be as revolutionary as believed, according to a music survey
that found listeners more in tune with friends' tips and radio than blogs and
social networking.

Industry Growth
We started as a projected service for writers in the
television industry. The interests of
documentary filmmakers came next. Now,

agency clients, the borders are being erased in the more sophisticated camps.
We have a list of jobs available in the entertainment
community. A reliable source has told us
that thy will provide a full list each month, if we are interested. Please check this list and let me know if you
feel we should be an outlet for these listings.

Ask About The Maui Video Marketplace
Our marketplace concept brings
together all parts needed to build a film, or a production studio or a
collaborative cluster of film-related businesses to grow the region.
We start with a seminar series,
printed programs and access to information supporting the global transition
from analog to digital product distribution.
From Internet applications to digital television to digital channels,
your career in the industry will be given a major boost by participating in the
Thornhill Digital Storytelling seminar.
The Maui Video Marketplace will
grow from an idea to a location for training, serving clients and developing
proprietary and contract media products.
The choices will include live events, classes, print media, audio and
radio, video and television, digital and Internet, plus film industry
connections.
Crew
We have openings for crew members.
The most obvious gap is in the wide
chasm of administration. There is still
hope for a partner company, yet we have met with qualified individuals who
could be of great assistance on a traditional contract basis.
The research needs are growing. Here’s a challenge – can we find 3 companies
for each of the elements in the 50 Steps To Documentary Success profile? For instance, when we suggest regular
meetings as one of the 50 steps, is it ok to list one or more meeting planners
– or even venues?
Here’s another. What
basic books can we recommend for the 50 elements, the genre or even for the
documentary film industry?
We have always needed, and will possibly always need,
production support. If this is your
turf, ask for the list of work assignments that we have reserved for production
partners.
It is apparent that a monthly planning session would be
helpful. This is also a great way to
introduce new partners and associates to the intricacies of our work, our very
cool partners and the vast potential in this category. The next date for a

A Partners Update
A few capable companies have responded to our call for
partners. Their feedback: The structure
of the TDS initiative is solid. The
continued research – guaranteeing an always-great seminar is stellar. If we continue this way, there could now be
partners for administration, TDS NEWS and TDS NEWS Digital.
Here again, should we have weekly or monthly planning
sessions? Let’s pull out the calendar,
talk to our current partners and start building a bigger, grander structure and
project.
Facilities
TDS does well when it comes to identifying interesting venues
for our events. With proper matchmaking
of venue to agenda, meetings can be held anywhere. We have succeeded in Los Angeles, Maui,
Pittsburgh, Seattle – and now Bellevue.
Recent conversations with associates in Jersey City, New Jersey have
included a quick look at dates to build meetings and/or a seminar for that
market.
Our library is only accessed when preparing for an
event. Space for our books, magazines
and reports could be the next move.
There are small spaces available in offices, stores and even a
warehouse.
Think Bigger!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a dedicated space as the office for the
management of Thornhill Digital Storytelling?
The desks, lamps, file cabinets and file transfer boxes are ready to go.
Then, of course, our studio... I am still making inquiries, touring buildings
and imagining the future in three possible cities.

The TDS Digital Landscape
Thornhill Digital Storytelling
will soon announce plans to be part of a 30-company campaign to learn more
about efficient PC platforms and the necessary drama to make enterprise-wide
integration work.
The recent flurry of activity in the smartphone and tablet
(mobile) space makes our decision to adopt the Windows 8 platform a lot more
interesting. This means there will be a
transition to a common platform for all that we do. Our integration of every aspect of our
technology universe into one productive framework would be a dream come
true.
An internal survey is being conducted. We’re looking to identify any and all
software from Microsoft. As the company
rumbles on towards the public launch of Windows 8 on October 26, 2012, we want
to tag along. To start, having a tidy
file of all things Microsoft will help move us to the next step.
This is all part of The Thornhill & Studio - Digital Landscape – Platform Integration campaign.
Platform
Integration
At the last Thornhill & Studio Design Review Quarterly,
we planned for our Digital Landscape, with assumptions for Platform Integration
of digital processes and devices. This
invigorating analysis has led us to consider Microsoft Windows 8 as the
technology system of record.
If you would like to join us in a private presentation on
the first day after the launch of Windows 8 - October 27th, 2012 –
at the Microsoft Store in University Village, let’s talk.
