Digital Storytelling As Documentary Process

Creating Programming For Digital Media

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Branded Content has never looked so luscious!  You know this fine example of digital storytelling must be fantastic by the opening paragraph in Forbes Magazine, Cartier, jewelry house of the Maharajahs, consultant to Elizabeth Taylor and maker of Kate Middleton’s wedding tiara, has released L’Odyssée de Cartier, a short film loosely chronicling the jewelry brand’s 165-year history.”

Once you arrive at www.forbes.com/sites/janelee/2012/03/04/cartier-unveils-dazzling-short-film-celebrating-165-year-anniversary/, scroll down to the video panel, click on full screen – and sit back.

The catalogue of all action at Thornhill & Studio is in the catalogue, Portfolio (www.thornhillportfolio.com).  The design is refreshed annually, starting in January of each year.  I am still working the brain cells for 2012.

There is a very real effort to use what I learn through Thornhill Digital Storytelling to influence and support each part of the whole.

1.

The crew and partners for The Thornhill Quarterly Design Review are just settling down from the great speakers for the Q1 rendition – and new information is already out for Q2.

2.

A third day has been added.  The dates are May 3, 4 & 5, 2012.  And the recently announced third day is a Special Gathering!  Our first Fashion Bloggers Mixer will be presented by: The Fashion Media Project on Saturday, May 5th, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the very sensual Blue Martini Lounge (www.bluemartinilounge.com) in the Bravern, next to Neiman Marcus.

For free, advance registration, go to http://thornhill-quarterly-Q2-2012.eventbrite.com.

3.

The Digital Television Report is a book, divided into four worlds.  Or at this point it is the manuscript for a book.  And then it becomes a theatrical film.

In the latest DTR booklet, we find this description:

“The Four Worlds narrative and the supportive research will be used as the initial source document to create a first script for the film, The Digital Television Report.  This first script will be a skeleton to indicate where the digital assets and features will come into play.

Two years of investigation, designing and researching “digital storytelling” has built well-deserved confidence that this endeavor will introduce a completely efficient method for filmmaking.

Projections for the end-product indicate that there will be 36 Hours of footage necessary to tell the whole story.  The production management team will be trained to prepare for distribution in many ways, as well as preparing for the need to divide and sub-divide – as based on the needs for distribution partners.

Again based on industry projections, the cost for the combination of the research, book and film will have to be kept at a maximum of $20 Million.  There will be additional dollars spent on other aspects of the project.

Team building for a film unit starts now.  The research crew members for the book will have the first look at how they can be grandfathered into the development of the first – and final – script.

Interest is high, the broadcast industry wants to be supportive and movie budgets are beginning to flow again.  Check this surprising article: “Fueled by hundreds of millions of dollars of new capital…”
www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/movies/la-fi-ct-universal-20120228,0,4453111.

4.

By the way, the DTR Opportunity Analysis & Update booklet editorial, reads like a script.  Hmmm…

5.

A little more transparent is the DTR National Tour documentary: DTR Journey, Food & Beverage Stories.  The timeline is from 2002 to 2012 and it is truly an escapist travelogue – in Thornhill Digital Storytelling style, of course.

The Thornhill Design Laboratory is responsible for Thornhill Digital Storytelling.  I have Friends, Partners and clients who are also interested in corporate and personal lab development.  Next week there will be a report.

Administration

Calling all planners, administrative assistants and project managers.  We need you to make our aggressive program complete!  Administrative services interest in partnering for development of businesses, events, publications and documentation might want to get their information to me.

Duties as basic as maintaining the project calendar and as difficult as database management will be offered to professional services.

Spaces:

With great luck we will strengthen our facilities planning with a crew to start on Proposals and eventually a presentation.

Our new home base is in Culver City, California.

These seminars have survived interesting venues.  There has been a photography center meeting room, a music studio, library meeting rooms, classrooms, a beautiful visual art gallery, a bar, a car dealership showroom and a technology center.

Digital Facilities…

Are facilities important enough to create a true digital hub?  The presentation would be fantastic with internet connections, cable connections, a satellite dish, large monitors, comfortable seating and hospitality.  How expensive are these digital facilities and who would build or outfit them?  This will certainly take additional research.

Production and Learning Studio

Would such an environment result in actual contracts?  Could it start with a training schedule?  What design and environment questions do we start with?

Digital Metropolis

A much more efficient process would be to start with a design for a cluster of buildings – planned for owner or tenants with a mutual interest in digital development.  Is there a plank in the local economic development platform to address such issues?

An exciting option like this takes about three years to evolve.  Please don’t think that immediate answers are required, but paying attention would be a good idea.

Partner recruiting will not be easy.  We continue to grow in sophistication – and each year is better than the last.  Our upgrades are reasonable and we love our work.  It will happen

Thornhill Digital Storytelling (TDS) is maturing very nicely in so many ways.  Of course the piece that keeps making new friends for the package – and keeps the veterans coming back – is our concept of Kai Zen; Continuous Improvement.  This is most visible in product development.

Research continues everyday.  As we make this primary product better, we are really following a game plan that will keep us on the right track for years.
